Gurple and Preen’s ship has gone kaput and is busted beyond repair but worse still is that their colorful cargo has spilled out everywhere and they’re not sure what to do. Gurple starts to pick up the fallen crayons one by one and is surprised by what comes out of them when they are broken, but how is a tablecloth, a flock of quails, and a skateboard going to help them get back on track with their mission? While Gurple grows increasingly frustrated, Preen gets to work finding inspiration in each new piece, repurposing them until the job is done. They’ll be on their way in no time!
I absolutely adore Debbie Ridpath Ohi’s Broken Crayon art and I was thrilled to see that she and Linda Sue Park were working together to create a Broken Crayon Cosmic Adventure. Gurple and Preen is filled with creativity and imagination and oodles of crayons! The ending surprised me so I won’t spoil it for you. You’re going to want to read it for yourself. When you’re done, or perhaps beforehand, you’ll want to check out Debbie’s Broken Crayon Classroom resources (https://www.debbieohi.com/brokencrayon-classroom/) where you’ll find tons of creative content that your students will enjoy. I plan to use this book and Sam & Eva (written and illustrated by Debbie Ridpath Ohi) this school year as we explore new ways to collaborate.
