Because | Score by Mo Willems, Performance by Amber Ren

BecauseBecause by Mo Willems

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My students are HUGE fans of Mo Willems and are constantly checking out his books from our library.  They adore the loveable Elephant & Piggie series, all three of the Knuffle Bunny Books, and every single one of the Pigeon’s stories. Therefore, adding one of this award-winning author/illustrator’s books to the collection is an instant add (whether I read the book first or not). As such, I have a copy of this book in my order that I am preparing for the end of the school year through one of my favorite vendors (Perma-Bound). When I stopped by my local library and saw Because on display I quickly scooped it up to add to my book haul for the day and what a treat it was!

Because surprised me. I mean, I knew it would be good but I didn’t know how much it would strike a chord with me. It follows the story of a little girl who was inspired by a chance experience she had to enjoy an evening of beautiful music. That night, as she listened to the orchestra, a dream was conceived and the story follows her pursuit of it until the point of achievement. One moment in time can change everything.

I found it difficult to believe that this is Amber Ren’s debut as a picture book illustrator because she did such a brilliant job of bringing Mo Willems’s story to life. The music danced on the pages with bright, magical colors and filled each one with wonder. Mo Willems tells a story that takes the reader behind the curtain, helping them understand that every role, from the orchestra librarian who had the score, to the musicians and conductor on the stage, are integral to the production. I showed this book to one of our music teachers and he loved it. I can’t wait to share it with my students too. I would recommend this book for students K-5.
