Daily, we tune in to our news outlets and are bombarded with doom and gloom, often rendering us afraid, worrisome, and feeling hopeless; grown-ups and children alike. When a young girl sees how the latest breaking news affects her family, friends, and community, she longs to make a difference. Her teacher encourages her to “look for the helpers…Even when the news is bad, you can still find good people trying to make things better in big and small ways.” She could be one of those people, and so can you, one small act of kindness at a time.
Sarah Lynne Reul captures the perspective of the adult and child both in text and illustration. She does a great job expressing the characters’ emotions and reactions to the breaking news. While we try our best to shield our babies from bad news, they see and hear more than we think they do. This book provides an opportunity to begin a discussion and is well-suited to use with your elementary aged students.
