Note: Review of Advance Reader’s Edition | Book Releases 6/2018

WARNING…Do not lick this book: It’s full of germs. Well, the title effectively grossed me out, so I therefore know that my students will love this book. In it, they will learn about microbes. They will get to experience cavities, dead skin, a dirty shirt and the like, completely zoomed in to the tiniest fibers. It is at once incredibly cool and icky. I never really thought of myself as a germaphobe but this book certainly took me there. I have felt torn as to whether or not I should add this book to my library because I kept imagining all of the yucky things that will happen to it before it gets returned…but isn’t that the risk we run with any library book?

This nonfiction gem represents the combined work of an author who created humorous banter: Idan Ben-Barak, the illustrator of the cute little microbes: Julian Frost, and Linnea Rundgren, who took the amazing microscope photos. At the very end, the reader gets to see what the microbes really look like and their scientific names. While I had difficulty shaking the icky feelings this book gave me, it was also irresistible. I will without a doubt be adding this book to my K-5 library where we already share many a microbe-ick!
