I am so excited about this most magnificent stack of books and the talent they represent; authors who have been in heavy rotation in my reading life this school year:
- John David Anderson
- Kwame Alexander
- Katherine Applegate
- Tosca Lee
- & 1 whom I have been recently introduced to, Angie Thomas
I started out in September with Katherine Applegate’s award winning book, The One & Only Ivan, which I LOVED! I shared it with my 5th grade library students who fell in love with it too. Next, we moved on to Katherine’s Crenshaw and it was so NICE that I had to read it THRICE. Seriously, I read it three times this school year!
I introduced my students next to Kwame Alexander. I looked him up since his book, The Crossover had won so many awards. This was before I’d gotten back to being active on Twitter, after taking two years off so I really didn’t know much about him. When I read The Crossover, boy oh boy did I enjoy it! That story meant the world to me and I never thought that a novel in verse could be so moving. Guess how many times I read this one? Yep, three times! I have since added Booked and The Playbook to our library collection.
Now I stumbled upon John David Anderson one day while looking for a good book for my 5th grade boys book club. I hadn’t yet heard anything about him but his book, Ms. Bixby’s Last Day sounded very appealing. We read the book and thought it was outstanding! My students could really relate to the three boys in the story. We even had a chance to do a live chat with him. Since then I’ve added Posted to our wish list for the library and am getting ready to read Minion and Sidekicked.
Rocking & Rolling Through My
Summer Reading Stack
What are you Reading?
Tosca Lee had me so into her books with the first one of hers I read, Demon. She is the one author on this list that caused me to read outside of my K-5 picture book and MG book world. This year I read The Progeny and am now currently reading First Born. Both are fast-paced thrillers that have (and are) keeping me up beyond my bedtime.
As for Angie Thomas, I kept hearing about her YA book, The Hate U Give nearly every time I checked my Twitter feed. Then I noticed that she is topping out the charts and landing #1 spots so I knew I had to check her out. I just started reading The Hate U Give today and man it got real, really fast…and I’m just at chapter three!!
As you can see, I’ve got a nice little Summer Reading Stack going on but now I’d like to know, what are you reading?
